How do I hear God?
“God is a person, and in the deep of His mighty nature he thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires, and suffers as any other person may. In making himself known to us He stays by the familiar patterns of personality. He communicates with us through the avenues of our minds, our wills, and our emotions. The continued unembarrassed interchange of love and thought between God and the soul of the redeemed man is the throbbing heart of the New Testament. The intercourse between God and the soul is known to us in conscious personal awareness. It is personal: It does not stay below the threshold of consciousness and work there unknown to the soul but comes within the field of awareness where the man can know it as he knows any other fact of experience.” – A.W Tozer “The Pursuit of God”
Read 1 Kings 19:11-12.
We hear all the time that God is a living person. We hear that he wants to walk intimately with us each and every day which is an awesome (maybe slightly frightening) thought. And, it leads us to ask these questions of ourselves: “But, If he’s living why can’t I hear Him? Why can’t I see Him?”
I believe each person is created in the image of God (Gen 1:27) and so we ALL have the capacity to hear His voice. But it can be very difficult to hear God’s voice trying to get your attention.
Why is this?
- We are so distracted by noise (opinions, ideas, knowledge, media, people etc.)
- Many of us are so weighed down by our SIN and our hearts are in so much turmoil that God cannot break through the deafening noise of our earthly reality to bring us into a new spiritual reality where peace, love, and joy reign Supreme.
- Some of us are so comfortable with noise/distractions because it keeps us from having to ponder the real brokenness of our lives.
In my car, just like yours there’s a radio which you can tune to different stations depending on your mood, taste of music etc. You’re really not going to hear the latest hit from Justin Bieber while tuned to ESPN radio. Hearing God is very similar. Many of us are tuned to the wrong frequency. Our lives are so busy being lived on a certain level of awareness that we are not tuned in to what God is doing on a spiritual level. We expect God to speak to us while we are actually tuned into the wrong frequency.
You’ve actually got to stop…for a while…and listen. God is speaking…NOW…to you…He’s trying to get your attention…He’s pursuing you…every moment of every day.
This is not easy. It’s hard to focus long enough to hear. But, persevere and you’ll hear the voice of your Maker – whose words can make nothing into something and can renew your very soul!
