“…and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.” – Matthew 6:12
Today we’re gonna dip our feet into the concept of forgiveness, and we’ll begin with a quote from Sinclair Ferguson,”Only when we turn away from looking at our sin to look at the face of God, to find his pardoning grace, do we begin to repent. Only be seeing that there is grace and forgiveness with him would we ever dare to repent and thus return to the fellowship and presence of the Father…only when grace appears on the horizon offering forgiveness will the sunshine of the love of God melt our hearts and draw us back to Him.“
Forgiveness is a free gift from God but we must receive it. We receive it by first acknowledging our sin nature (not just our individual sins but the fact that we are sinful to the core) and repenting from our sin in prayer. Every person is a sinner (Romans 3:23) and needs forgiveness to avoid God’s judgement and inherit eternal life – and this forgiveness is available to all through Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24-25).
Check out 1 John 1:8-10. This passage is a beautiful illustration of how simple it is to receive forgiveness. All we must do is confess (declare or acknowledge) that we are sinful, turn to Jesus, and receive His forgiveness. I love the way Tim Chester says it in his book ‘You Can Change’, “Each day we turn afresh in faith and repentance toward God. We rediscover our first love all over again so that we’re not tempted to engage in spiritual adultery. The key to continual and deeper spiritual renewal and revival is the continual rediscovery of the Gospel”.
Today, and every day from now turn back to God in repentance and faith, knowing that God is faithful and just to forgive you for your sin. We will deal with the amazing benefits of this forgiveness another time (there are MANY!)
