Obedience

3. We must respond with OBEDIENCE!

“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:6-9

In order to truly embrace God’s plan for our lives we must recognize that we are naturally sinful and disobedient.  I’m sure you’ll agree that we don’t have to try to sin, it comes naturally!  This ‘Sin nature’ separates us from God, because God is completely holy (i.e perfect) and we are…well…not.  But this is not the end of the story (Read: Romans 3:21-31).  We see in this passage that Jesus has come and taken our punishment for our Sin (not just the individual sins we do, but our entire ‘Sin nature’).  Through FAITH in Jesus we can walk in the amazing plan that God has for us and ‘be successful in everything we do’!

Christianity is NOT just about doing the right things (coming to church, serving, helping people, being nice etc.).  This is not to say these things are bad, but sometimes our good deeds can be just as sinful as our ‘bad’ deeds.  This is because we can be doing good things but our hearts can still be far from God.  Only when we have faith in Jesus, and experience His love, will our hearts change and move closer to God’s heart (Read: John 14:6).  True obedience can only happen once our hearts experience the Love of Jesus.  It is this love that motivates obedience and behavior change (Read: John 15:9-12).

Today.  Know that you have a Savior.  His name is Jesus Christ.  In Him you are made whole and made right (i.e saved) in God’s sight.  He is with you ALL THE TIME!  By accepting Jesus’ Love into your heart you will be changed from the inside – out.  Amen.
